POETS & MUSICIANS
On Sept. 8 Jinx Cafe in Wicker Park was filled with poets, musicians, & fans of the arts. Katrina benefit attendees spilled onto the sidewalk, and boxes of much-needed items were stacked like sandbags. Teaching artist poets lit the stage: Krista Franklin, Kevin Coval, Avery R. Young, and Toni Asante Lightfoot, to name a few. DJ Itch 13's beats set the backdrop, Young Chicago Authors alums like Christiana Colon and musician Narcisco Lobo rocked the cafe.
Super thanks to Mike Haeflinger for putting the whole thing together!!! ***Send him an e-mail: molotovhepcat@yahoo.com
PERFORMANCE POET & BLACK FRATERNITY
Last weekend, teaching artist Nikki Patin collected donations for Katrina survivors during her one-woman show, "Off Inside My Head." These efforts supported a project led by Chris Baird, who has turned to the 3,000 members of his black fraternity to gather "clothes, food, hygiene products, sanitary products, fresh water, etc.." & bring them to New Orleans via rented U-Haul trucks and trailers. Nikki asks everyone to "help the victims of this terrible tragedy in any way." ***Contact Nikki Patin: eclecticdiva@sbcglobal.net, (708) 363-0292

At yesterday's abbreviated meeting, Jen Karmin asked everyone the question, "What are you doing this summer?"
I'd love to continue this dialogue right here, on the CTAC weblog.
Answers from those present:
*teaching full-time for two six-week sessions at a summer camp, run by a friend in the suburbs
*no work planned: grant submitted by community center was not accepted by After School Matters (program had provided work for the past two summers)
*taking time to visit/help family out of town
*taking time to visit/help family in the Chicago area
Questions to consider:
***Do you have a steady, annual gig, like a summer camp?
***Do you stay in Chicago? Do you travel in the summer months?
***Have you worked out a budget to spread school-year income throughout a 12-month period?
***How productive are you as an artist in the summer? Do you attend artist workshops? Residencies?
***Do you take the summer months to nurture your family, home, garden, friends?
***When do you know what you're doing in the summer? Do you have suggestions for resources that would help others find work/residencies, etc.?
Thanks!!
